Quality mobile home holidays in Europe

This beautifully written book is the first novel by Helen Simonson and we look forward to her writing more. The book’s main character is Major Ernest Pettigrew, an elderly gentlemen living contentedly in the sleepy village of Edgecombe St Mary that is until his brother dies! His brother’s death has a profound affect on the Major and he seeks to ask himself what matters most to him – family obligation, tradition or love? He finds companionship with the most unlikely village shopkeeper, Mrs Ali and the story is deeply moving, at times witty and all in all a perfect holiday read.

Our EuroParcs book club members gave it a vote of 8 out of 10 and all enjoyed the book. It is 385 pages long so ideal to pack in your luggage. A few members thought it would appeal to both men and women alike and many felt able to relate to the Major’s family complications following the death of his brother – the book touches on the tricky subject of “inheritance” and “wills”. All in all a good book that makes you think!!!

Our next book that we will be reviewing is The Sense of and Ending by Julian Barnes
