Typical Turnhout

Welcome to Turnhout, the city that appointed itself the capital of the Kempen and the city known for playing cards. Stroll through the cozy city center with the Grote Markt and the world-famous Beguinage or enjoy the beautiful surroundings in the Kempen region.

From the Beguinage to playing cards

The best-known sights in Turnhout are undoubtedly the famous Beguinage, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Castle of the Dukes of Brabant, which today serves as a court of justice. You can only view the halls of the castle with a guide. In addition, in the city of playing cards, a visit to the National Museum of Playing Cards is of course not to be missed. A city walk through the inner city takes you past photogenic spots such as the Grand Place with St. Peter's Church. And those who love shopping can visit the Gasthuisstraat, Turnhout's most famous shopping street.

Surroundings of Turnhout

As mentioned, Turnhout has appointed itself the capital of the Flemish Kempen. Here you can enjoy all that nature has to offer. You can cycle or walk endlessly along babbling brooks and across the Turnhoutse Vennen area. This is one of the most important moors in Flanders where you can see special meadow birds such as the curlew and the black-tailed godwit. The Kalmthoutse Heide is also a beautiful nature reserve where dunes, fens and forests alternate. Don't forget to bring binoculars!
