Places of interest in Alkmaar – more than just cheese

Alkmaar is world-famous for its traditional cheese market. Cheese has been traded on Waagplein (a central square in Alkmaar) since 1365. Every Friday morning from April to the first Friday in September, you can watch the traditional Dutch spectacle of cheese carriers and taste different types of cheese. But Alkmaar has much more to offer than just cheese.

The old town invites you to take a stroll along its charming canals, past historic buildings and cosy cafes. Delve into the city's fascinating history at the Stedelijk Museum, while the Cheese Museum provides interesting insights into the tradition of Dutch cheese-making. There's even a real Beatles museum which surpasses the one in Liverpool as the largest one in the world!

Beer lovers can visit the De Boom Beer Museum and should definitely try the local brews for themselves. You can also enjoy shopping or a drink at an outdoor café in the cosy city centre of Alkmaar.
